PROJECTILES Alexander Sakharuk, P. Gregers Hansen, and Vladimir Zelevinsky 1National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and 2Department of Physics and Astronomy, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1321 USA (September 8, 1999) Single-particle removal reactions are becoming an important tool for studying radioactive nuclei. The nuclei far from stability may reveal new regions of large deformation. We discuss the influence of the projectile deformation on the stripping cross sections and longitudinal momentum distributions of the core. The Glauber formalism for describing such reactions is developed and compared with the simpler geometric approach and with existing experimental data. The most significant effects are expected for nuclei with valence spherical orbitals strongly mixed by deformation. The shape of the momentum distribution, in turn, can be used for determining the degree of deformation of the projectile.

Study of Giant Pairing Vibrations with neutron-rich nuclei
We investigate the possible signature of the presence of giant pairing states at excitation energy of about 10 MeV via two-particle transfer reactions induced by neutron-rich weakly-bound projectiles. Performing particle-particle RPA calculations on Pb and BCS+RPA calculations on Sn, we obtain the pairing strength distribution for two particles addition and removal modes. Estimates of two-parti...
متن کاملQuenching of cross sections in nucleon transfer reactions.
Cross sections for proton knockout observed in (e,e'p) reactions are apparently quenched by a factor of ∼0.5, an effect attributed to short-range correlations between nucleons. Here we demonstrate that such quenching is not restricted to proton knockout, but a more general phenomenon associated with any nucleon transfer. Measurements of absolute cross sections on a number of targets between 16O...
متن کاملProjectile deformation effects on single-nucleon removal reactions
We discuss intermediate-energy single-nucleon removal reactions from deformed projectile nuclei. The removed nucleon is assumed to originate from a given Nilsson model single-particle state and the inclusive cross sections, to all rotational states of the residual nucleus, are calculated. We investigate the sensitivity of both the stripping cross sections and their momentum distributions to the...

We study the spin-parity distribution P(J,E) of Gd excited states above the neutron separation energy that are expected to be populated via the neutron pickup reaction Gd(He,He)Gd. In general, modeling of the spin-parity distribution is important for the applicability of the surrogate reaction technique as a method of deducing reaction cross sections. We model excited states in Gd as rotational...

Optical limit Glauber theory calculations of reaction cross sections, used to deduce nuclear sizes from high energy data, are studied in the case of a deformed projectile ~or target!. We show that a previously applied formula, used to adjust the root-mean-squared radius deduced assuming spherical projectiles, is consistent with results which treat the projectile deformation explicitly within th...
